The Candy Dish
The title and GORGEOUS illustrations drew me to this book instantly. From Kobi Yamada, author of, What Do You Do With an Idea?, The Candy Dish is a story about an ordinary girl who discovers an enchanting and very curious dish. Upon opening the dish, she finds a piece of candy. The girl savors the delicious candy and then of course, wants MORE! She tries to open the dish again but the lid does not budge, no matter how hard she tries. Instead of feeling grateful for the piece of candy she did get, the girl feels upset that she does not have more. She goes on to discover that the candy dish opens once a day, but still finds herself feeling frustrated and wanting more. By the end, the girl learns to truly savor each piece of candy and sees each day as an amazing gift.
Reading Questions:
- What would you do if you found a magical candy dish?
- The girl in the story seems very upset when the dish only allows her to have one piece of candy a day. How do you think you would you feel if this happened to you? What would you do?
- How do you think the girl is feeling about the candy dish by the end of the story? Is she still upset?
This story helps to show us that each day is an incredible, magical gift and we should always appreciate the time that we have. I hope you will check out, The Candy Dish! My kiddos definitely enjoyed this story and I know I will be reading this again when we might need a reminder to appreciate what we have!
